Day 3 Chiu Chiu - Chuquicamata - Calama - Chiu Chiu (83 Km.)

Having crossed across the Atlantic, have been at Buenos Aires, landed in Santiago, Chile, having completed the rigorous customs control, taking a plane to Calama with a stopover in Antofagasta, rented a car and having traveled Chiu Chiu (about 30 Km.), We´ve rested all night and we prepare to discover this wonderful country. To do this we start visiting the area of the Atacama desert.

(in 44 Km.) Chuquicamata: This is a gigantic hole really impressive about 4 km. long, 2 km. wide and with a depth of 700 meters. Giant trucks capable of carrying 200 tons of stone, up and down slowly, among clouds of dust, laden with mineral wealth that give the whole country.

The copper mine of Chuquicamata is the largest in the world in terms of holding open sky. They say that next to the Great Wall of China, Chuquicamata is one of two things made by man that can be seen from the Moon.

(in 16 Km.) Calama: It´s a desert city located at an altitude of 2260 meters above sea level, on the banks of the river Loa. Founded in the nineteenth century is a town where we lived for many workers in the mine Chuquicamata. Calama is rather a place of transit for those who continue their journey to the attractive oasis of San Pedro de Atacama, or by train to Bolivia.

(in 33 Km.) Chiu Chiu: It is a small settlement of Hispanic origin, home to some 400 inhabitants. Emphasizes the church of San Francisco, a typical colonial monument. It was erected in the second half of the seventeenth century with adobe, cactus wood and mud. The temple is one of the most beautiful areas of northern Chile, and possibly the oldest.
